Stream of Consciousness Saturday: Night Caller…

06 Jun

imageThis week’s entry in Linda G Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday feature was based on the prompt, “information”.
Go over and check out her blog HERE.

Night caller.

“Hello, Information, can I help you?.”

The relief in the reply, despite the crackling phone line, was obvious, though the caller spoke in a hoarse, barely-heard whisper, “Oh thank God, I thought I was the last one, the only one left…”, the voice dissolved into choking sobs for a few seconds, then continued, “how did you avoid them, are you outside the city?”

“I’m sorry sir, I’m not sure I understand you. This is Information for the entire greater metropolitan area, which number or service do you require?”

There was a pause, incredulous even over the phone, ” “Services”? Services?! What are you talking about, what services? There aren’t any “services”, they’ve taken everything!
There’s nothing left, everyone’s gone. I haven’t heard another voice for days!”

“You need to report a crime, is that right sir?”

The laughter that followed could only be described as maniacal, “Yes, Yes, that’s it, a crime! A crime against humanity!” More laughter.

More sobbing. Then just ragged breathing.

Another pause, then;
“Perhaps if you could tell me your location sir, we can send assistance. Could I have your address please sir?”

“You really have people you can send, you’re going to come get me?” Disbelief in that disembodied voice now, along with gratitude and elation. The voice of a mind grasping at its last straw.

“Just as soon as you tell me where you are sir,” that same level, patient professional tone, “we’ll despatch a unit to you immediately.”

Gratitude positively flooding the voice now, the release of pent-up emotion audible down the line, “Of course, yes, I’m on the east side of the Park, the large red brick house on the corner, you can’t miss it.”

“Ok sir, you just stay put and look out for a unit arriving at your location shortly.”

Different laughter now, relief mixed with hope, “Oh don’t you worry, I’m not going anywhere, I’m not even going out on the porch. You’ll have to come in and get me.”

“That’s right sir, we’ll come and get you.”

“Thank you, bless you, please hurry.”

The connection was broken.

“That is the last one, you are certain?”

The drone turned from the communicator screen, viewed the undamaged yet deserted city below the giant structure and addressed the command node that controlled it;
“Sensors detect no other unabsorbed lifeforms in the vicinity.”

Another pause, this one with no discernable emotional content whatever, then;

“That is acceptable, move on to sector 2”

      Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Not sure where it came from, but it turned out alright. My short stories can get a bit long, I tried to keep this one brief and to the point. ;~}
