One liner Wednesday: Alternative dictionary…

14 Dec

Today’s alternative definition is brought to you by a particularly British stereotype:

“Patriot” – A gang of unruly Irishmen.

I once had a fling with a visiting Dubliner…took him to my parents’ house, and we went for a walk. A garter snake slithered in front of us…he was terrified. He’d never seen a snake before. As a country girl, I found that rather hilarious.

Yup. I don’t think the idea that there MIGHT be a snake even occurred to him. It was a small, slender snake, not a threat – to ME. But then, there are definitely snakes in America (and I’ll bite my tongue on saying anything more about that, because, really, it won’t help).

That’s a huge problem in the Everglades, where we lived and worked for one winter. People tend to buy Burmese pythons as pets, but when they get to big, they release them in the swamp. They get larger and reproduce faster than the native species…they’re actually getting so big and populous that some of them have killed and eaten alligators!

We’ve got a wide variety of snakes in the states. Really not much in the way of poisonous ones here in upstate New York, but further south and west, there are more.

Well That sounds scary but if an alien is released in to the wild nature will either let it thrive or kill it off. We are lucky that we do not have that problem, yet!

I never saw one while we were there. Alligators in abundance, and a pygmy rattlesnake once.

No snakes in Ireland. Well known fact, St Patrick threw them all out.

Did you know there was a team of unruly Irishmen up in New England? They’re led by this guy named Tom O’Brady.

It’s funny, the ones I come up with at the last minute and think “Oh, that’ll have to do”, everyone likes. The ones I think are works of literary brilliance, people are, “Meh, ok.”

I’ve had that happen as well. You never know what might appeal to people.

Ha! Maybe not literary brilliance, but it’s a good one.
